Dallas had the cough assist last night around midnight, but we’ve fortunately moved on to an “as needed” basis. She seems to be managing her coughs and keeping her airway on her own pretty well now.

We were happy to welcome Brooklyn from Music Therapy again, as she is able to play light guitar music and sing some of Dallas’s favorite songs, including APT. (ballad style) – a song by ROSÉ & Bruno Mars that Dallas ran around singing for MONTHS (“Ah-Puh-Tah-Puh-tet“) without us having a clue what it was!

PT/OT crew was back in again today and worked with Dallas (fully supported) sitting on the edge of the bed. Lots of stimulating and tapping above knees created a lot of good reflex response, that they didn’t see yesterday –a small  improvement!

PM&R came in to start the conversations of next steps in her recovery process. We’ll continue 2 doses per day of Amantadine, as it’s been shown to have positive effects on brain injury patients, and the side effects are very low. It was suggested to look into Botox injections in her calf’s, as it can help to ease the muscle tone/stiffness – for upwards of 90 days –  which could help with recovery efforts and PT sessions. PM&R noted that they didn’t see any reason Dallas wouldn’t recover well, which was positive to hear and we hope they’re right. In our minds, she’s done it before and can do it again!

Dr. Fan from the neuro team stopped by and reaffirmed that she believes Amantadine will continue be beneficial during the entire recovery process. She also recommended that Levocarnitine be added to her supplements, as it helps to act as a transporter of sorts for nutrition and other good stuff to and from the cells. That first dose of Levocarnitine was given around 8:30 this evening.

Dr. Fan also believes that keeping a more traditional feeding schedule during the day will be the most ideal, as it will allow her to get the best rest at night. Also, when the stomach is empty that is when vitamins and nutrients gets absorbed. Food at night can disrupt sleep as it creates extra work for the body when digesting. Ideal to have no food between 10pm and 2am.

Dallas SMILED today! We saw a small movement in her left cheek this morning and wondered if it was a smile or grimace (her movements are so tiny it’s hard to tell). Then she did it again and Heather asked if she was smiling… she used her eyes to tell her yes! 😃

It all sounds so positive to me. I heard recently (from a neurologist) that music therapy was the recommended treatment. Maybe it was on NPR.
