Happy to share that Dallas’s back MRI came back normal yesterday—one less thing to worry about.
The resident doctor came in this morning for an evaluation. Heather mentioned that Dallas had been coughing a bit overnight, and we’re still scratching our heads over it. She was virus-free when she was admitted, but hospitals have a way of introducing new variables. The good news is that her lungs sound clear. We also realized she wasn’t turned or repositioned overnight, so we’re making sure she’s on a proper schedule for that moving forward. No more PICU—she’s being transferred to a regular bed as soon as one is available. That’s a step in the right direction!
PT was in today and did a great job working with her—pushing just the right amount. Every bit of movement matters, and they’re being mindful of her limits while still encouraging progress.
During rounds, a few updates:
- She’ll now be turned every two hours.
- Adjusting bowel regimen to see if we can get things moving.
- Spine MRI results were normal (worth repeating!).
- Continuing steroids and IVIG, with tapering to begin tomorrow.
- Feeds will transition to a more structured schedule instead of continuous feeds—hoping this helps her body get back to a more natural rhythm.
- Flushness in her face is still being monitored, but we think it’s looking a bit better.
- Notably, she’s responding better to stimulus—especially with her left arm. She’s starting to pull away from stimuli by bending at the elbow. This is a BIG win!
And speaking of wins… Dallas had a mega poop blowout today. I’m choosing to believe this is a major victory for her belly—some much-needed relief!
On the more glamorous side of hospital life, Nurse Katie worked some more magic on Dallas’s hair. She and Heather managed to get all but two tiny knots out, then braided it into pigtails. We picked up a silk pillowcase for her pillow to keep it from matting again. A small but meaningful comfort!
Heather spent some time helping Dallas to doodle and practice her writing. Though not really “awake” for it, practicing writing and learning her letters are things that she really enjoys doing!
We did try switching her to feeding to more regular and larger intervals, but her belly wasn’t quite on board with that plan, and she ended up vomiting. So, back to slow continuous feeds for now. We’ll give her more time and try again when she’s ready. Not uncommon, just part of the process.
Through it all, Dallas keeps fighting, we keep advocating, and we hold onto hope. Tomorrow, we try again! ❤️
“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” — Mary Anne Radmacher
