Since yesterday afternoon, Dallas has been mostly in an initial “resting and recovering” phase of her ANE episode. After the first round of steroids last night, she was also given a dose IVIG to assist in the efforts. EKG leads were placed by midnight to monitor for potential seizure activity (common when this sort of thing is going on), but I’m thankful to report that no seizure activity was noted in this morning’s report and the leads were later removed.
She opened her eyes and looked around the room this morning – while not necessarily tracking us visually, she did seem to respond in a positive way to our voices, which makes us feel good. She had some vomiting going early on, and seemed to battle nausea throughout the day. Two different nausea meds were given to give some relief, and one of them practically knocked her out cold; in fact, the attending physician indicated that the last time he took that med, he slept for 14 hours!
The initial game plan is to have five days in a row of high-dose steroids, coupled with IVIG and IV fluids. She’ll start Tocilizumab (a drug previously used back in 2022’s episode to assist with knocking down the inflammation), thus reducing the “brain storming” that is going on. Today’s blood work revealed that her C-reactive protein, a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, has dropped from the initial level of 23 down to 5 – a good marker that inflammation is coming down!
Otherwise, her fever is on the way out, holding steady at or just below 100, blood work is looking good, her vitals remain strong, and she’s getting the much needed rest that her body needs to start this recovery. We’re so grateful and thankful that everything came together so quickly in facilitating her getting “online” with her care specialists here at UNC Hospital. Thanks to everyone’s working together to follow her protocols, we feel that she’s setup for a much better outcome.
Thank you so much to everyone who has called, texted, emailed, brought supplies, and otherwise just flat out poured out their hearts fully in showing their love and support for our family – it means so much to know that we’re not alone in this fight!
