This morning greeted us with a welcome gift: a restful night for Dallas and a significant improvement in her heart rate — around 104 at 7am, a world of difference from where we were just 24 hours ago. Rest really does wonders, and she had a peaceful one with PopPop by her side. That alone set the tone for a much better day.

During rounds, we got reassurance that there’s no immediate concern regarding her liver numbers being a bit off — likely due to Tylenol use or maybe a ripple effect from all she’s got onboard: PLEX, steroids, and more. Blood counts being a little off-track also fall into that same category. Nothing alarming, just part of the picture when you’re undergoing this level of treatment. Speaking of PLEX, she completed another round today, and if things stay on track, we’ll get another one in tomorrow. That’ll help us keep pace with her treatment schedule to get three sessions this week.

PT and OT were back in action with her today. They worked on some supported sitting practice and got her emulating the use of fine motor skills to pick things out of a water basin. Her feet got to splash in the basin too, which was a nice little break from routine. A different kind of sensory experience for her — small, but meaningful changes in her day.

At one point, Heather heard a stir in the hallway — laughter, energy, unmistakable signs of something good. And then, it was confirmed: therapy dog on the floor! Enter Sabor, a two-year-old German Shepherd mix with gentle eyes and a wagging tail. He made his way into Dallas’s room and brought with him that special kind of quiet joy that only dogs seem to know how to deliver.

We got her outside again — courtyard time, fresh air, sunshine. The birds were thrilled with some leftover pita bread crumbs, and I may or may not be trying to win their friendship, one crumb at a time. They seemed to approve via the chirps.

Back in her room, we kept her up in her chair for a good while. It’s important — changes the pressure points, gives her a new perspective, and just mixes up the routine. Later in the afternoon, she got some “tummy time,” which the hospital doesn’t include in its turning schedule. But she seemed to enjoy it, and so we’re making it a part of the mix. It’s always about finding those small things that add up to something bigger.

The best part of today? Her vitals held steady and normal throughout. That elevated heart rate from before — we still don’t know why it happened, but we’re incredibly grateful it has settled. And so, today ends with hearts a bit lighter and brighter.

“There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” — Leonard Cohen

How wonderful that Dallas gets to experience so many options in her stimulus and environment. Each one surely plays a role in recovery and stimulation. Such a blessing for medicine to intersect with emotions. Have another great day today.
