Dallas had a bit of a restless night last night, between diaper changes, coughing, and overnight feeds. She had a cough assist early this morning, but the RT (Respiratory Therapist) indicated that unless Dallas coughs, or the machine encourages her to cough, it wouldn’t help much. Throughout the day she did have some productive coughs, which usually calmed things down pretty quickly afterward. We feel that the effectiveness of her cough might directly depend on her level of fatigue and energy, as to whether she’s able to better clear it.
During the morning rounding, there wasn’t too much to report – her vitals are still looking good; they planned on switching to 4 bolus feeds today, so long as she handles them well. That said, she did have a couple of spit-up moments this afternoon, which seemed to be related to her potentially gagging while clearing mucus during coughs. Her nurses listened to her immediately following both events, and noted that her breathing and lungs were both sounding clear.
We look each day for changes and noted that she yawned occasionally. While not much to bat an eye out normally, it’s another small step in the right direction for her recovery to be able to do so. During a couple of those, we also heard a bit of a sigh, which is the first vocal noise we’ve heard. At one point in the day, we feel that she wanted so badly to talk, but doesn’t have it in her… yet!
PT/OT worked with her and left some floor mats and a therapy bench that we could use in between sessions. We’re excited about the floor mat, not just because we can better snuggle with her outside the hospital bed, but we can get her on her belly for some tummy time easier and get some stretches through her hips. Although still fully supported, PT noted that they felt she had a little bit better neck control today.
The highlight of the day was busting out – getting her out of the room to stroll through the halls in her chair. Even for those 15–20 minutes, it was so nice for her to get out of the room 4 walls and be able to tour the floor untethered from all the wires, leads, etc. Tomorrow is another day, and we’ll continue looking for the tiny changes and improvements that show us she’s moving in the right direction.
